Daniel Paxquest has dedicated his life to working for peace through justice in the Third World. Prior to departing for work in the Nicaraguan missions, he takes a substitute teaching assignment. At the school he encounters Janina Veritasovicz, a student who is deeply troubled to learn that the CIA has just been caught mining the harbors of Nicaragua. A raging debate unfolds regarding the role of America in Third World conflicts and how individual citizens can respond to the call for justice in developing nations. Daniel feels called to go to Nicaragua in solidarity with the people there, but his sense of mission becomes complicated when he falls in love with Sarah Covnanz, a teacher at the school, who feels her mission is to work for justice through her teaching and political involvement in America. Meanwhile, though sparks fly between them, Janina and her trouble-making classmate, Paul Tarses, fall in love. Their new romance is thrown into crisis, however, when Janina discovers she is pregnant and Paul flees the scene. Once Daniel has settled in Nicaragua, he writes to Sarah about the personal impact the Nicaraguan conflict has on him and the people of his village. As the couple yearns to be reunited, suddenly Daniel is kidnapped and presumed killed. Sarah's life is thrown into tumult by the news. She resolves to go to Nicaragua to find her beloved, if he is still alive. Upon arriving in Nicaragua, Sarah is drawn into the shadowy world of Juan Carlos, a wealthy plantation owner. She soon learns that Juan Carlos holds the key to unlocking the mystery of Daniel's disappearance.
